Net run rate (NRR) is a cricket statistic that compares how quickly a team scores runs with how quickly it concedes them. In a league or group stage, it can help separate teams that finish level on points when the competition's rules use NRR as a tie-breaker.

The short answer

NRR = average run rate scored − average run rate conceded. A positive value means the team has scored at a higher rate than its opponents across the included figures. A negative value means its opponents have scored at a higher rate.

What Is Net Run Rate in Cricket?

Net run rate (NRR) compares a team's scoring rate with the rate at which its opponents score across counted matches.

A team's run rate is its runs per over. NRR subtracts the opponents' scoring rate from the team's own rate.

If teams finish level on points, the team with the higher NRR may rank higher—but only if the tournament's tie-break rules use NRR at that stage.

A simple example

Team A scores at an average of 8.00 runs per over and concedes 7.20 runs per over.

+0.80 NRR

Its scoring rate is 0.80 runs per over higher than its opponents' rate. NRR is not a points or wins total.

Net Run Rate Formula

NRR compares the team's aggregate scoring rate with its aggregate conceded rate across counted matches.

Net run rate formula NRR = Run Rate For − Run Rate Against Run rate for = total runs scored ÷ relevant overs faced
Run rate against = total runs conceded ÷ relevant overs bowled

Add the relevant runs and overs across counted matches, calculate both rates, then subtract the rate against from the rate for.

Important distinction

Do not average match-by-match NRR figures. Use aggregate runs and relevant overs from all counted matches.

What do “run rate for” and “run rate against” mean?

Run rate for: the team's runs scored divided by its relevant overs faced.
Run rate against: the runs scored against that team divided by the relevant overs bowled by that team.
Net run rate: the first rate minus the second rate.

All-outs and rain-affected matches may need special treatment, so check the competition's playing conditions.

How to Calculate Net Run Rate: Step-by-Step Example

Example: a team plays two T20 matches, each with a full 20-over innings and no rain adjustment.

Match	Runs scored	Overs faced	Runs conceded	Overs bowled
Match 1	160	20	140	20
Match 2	150	20	130	20
Total	310	40	270	40

Add the runs scored

160 + 150 = 310 runs scored across the two matches.

Add the relevant overs faced

20 + 20 = 40 overs faced in this example.

Calculate the scoring rate

310 ÷ 40 = 7.75 runs per over.

Calculate the rate conceded

270 ÷ 40 = 6.75 runs per over.

Subtract the two rates

7.75 − 6.75 = +1.00 net run rate.

Final calculation

+1.00

The team's NRR in this example is +1.00. Across the counted innings, it has scored one run per over faster than its opponents have scored against it.

This example uses full 20-over innings to keep the arithmetic straightforward. If an innings ends early, a team is dismissed before its quota, or a result is affected by a rain-adjustment method, the overs or runs used in the calculation may differ under the applicable playing conditions.

What Do Positive and Negative NRR Mean?

The sign of net run rate tells you whether a team's scoring rate is higher or lower than the rate it concedes across the included matches.

Positive NRR does not guarantee qualification, and negative NRR does not rule it out. Points and other tie-breakers may come first.

How Overs and All-Outs Affect NRR

Scorecard overs are not decimal numbers, and an early all-out can change the overs used in the calculation.

Cricket overs are not decimal numbers

Each over has six valid balls. The digit after the dot shows balls bowled, not decimal fractions.

Scorecard notation	Meaning	Equivalent overs
18.0	18 completed overs	18.000
18.1	18 overs and 1 ball	18 + 1/6 ≈ 18.167
18.2	18 overs and 2 balls	18 + 2/6 ≈ 18.333
18.3	18 overs and 3 balls	18.500
18.4	18 overs and 4 balls	18 + 4/6 ≈ 18.667
18.5	18 overs and 5 balls	18 + 5/6 ≈ 18.833

For 18.2 overs, calculate 18 + 2/6 = approximately 18.333 overs—not 18.2 decimal overs.

What happens when a team is all out early?

Under the standard ICC approach, an all-out innings uses the full overs quota the team was entitled to, subject to the competition's rules.

Example: a team is all out in a T20 innings

Suppose a team scores 120 runs and is all out after 16.4 overs in a match where it was entitled to bat for 20 overs.

120 ÷ 20 = 6.00

The rate used is 120 ÷ 20 = 6.00, not 120 ÷ 16.667. Check the competition's rules.

Calculation tip

Check whether the innings ended by reaching the target, completing the quota, or being all out; the calculation can differ.

How Rain and No-Result Matches Affect NRR

Rain can shorten an innings, revise a target or cause a no-result, so standard calculations may not apply.

Rain-reduced matches

For DLS matches, follow the competition's NRR rules for the revised result; the basic formula may not be enough.

No-result matches

A match abandoned without a result generally does not count like a completed match, but rain-adjusted results may have special provisions.

Local tournaments should publish their own rules; do not assume every league follows international conditions.

Before you calculate

For rain-affected or no-result matches, check the competition rules before using an NRR calculator.

Common Net Run Rate Calculation Mistakes

Avoid these common mistakes when calculating NRR:

Using scorecard overs as decimals. Convert the ball count correctly instead of treating 18.2 as 18.2 decimal overs.

Using the overs before an early all-out. Under the standard ICC approach, an all-out innings uses the full quota the team was entitled to for NRR.

Averaging individual match NRR values. Calculate the aggregate scoring and conceded rates from the relevant totals instead.

Including every match automatically. Confirm which matches count and how abandoned or rain-affected games are treated.

Assuming NRR is always the first tie-breaker. Check whether the competition considers wins, head-to-head results or other criteria before NRR.

Rounding too early. Keep sufficient precision while calculating the rates, then follow the competition's rounding and display conventions.

How Can a Cricket Team Improve Its NRR?

Teams can improve NRR by scoring efficiently and restricting opponents, but match conditions and results still matter.

When batting first

Build a competitive total without losing control of the innings.
Use partnerships to maintain scoring momentum.
Look for scoring opportunities while managing wickets and match conditions.
When defending, restrict the opposition's scoring rate and take wickets where possible.

When chasing

Understand the required run rate and the target before planning the chase.
Build partnerships and avoid unnecessary pressure through avoidable dot balls or dismissals.
Where the match situation permits, finishing a chase efficiently can affect the rate used for that innings.
Keep the match result and the competition's NRR rules in perspective rather than chasing a theoretical number without considering the game situation.

These tactics do not guarantee qualification; final NRR depends on aggregate figures across counted matches.

For tournament organisers

Publish tie-break rules in advance and keep runs, overs, results and rain adjustments accurate for transparent standings.

Frequently Asked Questions About Net Run Rate

What is the formula for net run rate in cricket?

NRR is the aggregate scoring rate minus the aggregate rate conceded across counted matches, using the competition's rules.

How do you calculate NRR if a team is all out early?

Under the standard ICC approach, use the full overs quota the team was entitled to, subject to the competition's rules.

Does a higher net run rate mean a team has more points?

No. Points come from match results; NRR may separate teams level on points if the rules say so.

Does a no-result match affect net run rate?

Usually, no-result matches do not count, while rain-adjusted results may have special rules. Check the tournament conditions.

How do you read 18.2 overs in cricket?

It means 18 overs and 2 balls, or about 18.333 overs—not 18.2 decimal overs.

Can a team qualify with a negative NRR?

Yes, depending on its points, results and the competition's qualification rules. A negative NRR does not automatically eliminate a team. It may matter if teams are tied and NRR is the applicable tie-breaker.

Is net run rate calculated separately for each match?

No. Tournament NRR uses aggregate runs and overs from counted matches, not the average of match-level NRR figures.
