Who Is the Current Coach of the Indian Cricket Team?

The name, the appointment date, the coaching staff around him and the milestones so far: everything fans ask about India's men's head coach, in one place.

The current coach of the Indian men's cricket team is Gautam Gambhir. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed him head coach on 9 July 2024, after Rahul Dravid's tenure ended following India's 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup win. His first assignment was India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July 2024.

Fans search for the coach whenever a big series or tournament nears, because the head coach prepares the players and plans how the team plays. Below we cover who Gambhir is, who works with him and what his tenure has produced.

Good to know

Coaching staff and series assignments change often. The details here reflect news reports up to early October 2026, so check the latest BCCI announcement before relying on a staff list.

Who is Gautam Gambhir?

Gautam Gambhir is a former India left-handed opening batter, known for big-match innings. He played important knocks in India's wins in the 2007 ICC Men's T20 World Cup final and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final.

He also captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, and returned to KKR as a mentor for their title-winning 2024 season. That mix of international, captaincy and franchise experience was part of the background to his appointment.

When did Gambhir become India's head coach?

The BCCI announced Gambhir's appointment on 9 July 2024. The BCCI had advertised the role as a term running from July 2024 to 31 December 2027, covering all three formats. His first series in charge was in Sri Lanka, with three T20Is and three ODIs.

Who coached India before him?

Rahul Dravid was head coach before Gambhir. Under Dravid, India reached the finals of the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and the 2023 ICC World Test Championship, and won the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in his final tournament.

What does an India head coach do?

The head coach prepares the players, plans strategy and helps the team handle pressure. Hover over a card to see how that works in practice.

Good to know

A head coach does not usually select the team alone. Selection is handled by the national selectors, so the coach works with them, the captain and the specialist coaches.

Who is on India's coaching staff?

The head coach works with specialists for each part of the game. The group below is based on news reports from mid-2026.

Role	Name	Main focus
Head coach	Gautam Gambhir	Overall preparation, planning and coordination
Batting coach	Sitanshu Kotak	Batting technique and shot selection
Fast-bowling coach	Morne Morkel	Pace bowling skills, accuracy and tactical plans
Spin-bowling coach	Sairaj Bahutule	Spin technique, control and strategy; appointed in June 2026
Fielding coach	Subhadeep Ghosh	Catching, ground fielding and throwing; appointed in August 2026

Ghosh replaced T Dilip after the BCCI chose not to extend his contract. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate's contract had also ended, and the BCCI confirmed both exits on 28 July 2026. Reports in early August said the assistant coach post was still vacant.

Also note that the coach named for one series may not be the permanent head coach. In July 2026, reports said VVS Laxman would lead the team for the Zimbabwe T20Is and the Asian Games, while Gambhir stayed with the senior squad for the West Indies series.

What has India achieved under Gambhir?

India has won two ICC trophies during his tenure. They won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and then the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, beating New Zealand in the final in Ahmedabad.

2025: ICC Champions Trophy winners.
2026: ICC Men's T20 World Cup winners, successfully defending the title.

Trophies are not the only measure of a tenure. News reports also point to setbacks, including home Test series defeats to New Zealand and South Africa. Test, ODI and T20 cricket demand different skills, so a coaching staff has to adapt its plans for each format and keep results consistent over time.

Previous coaches of the Indian cricket team

India relied on overseas coaches from 2000 to 2015, then returned to Indian head coaches. This list covers the men's senior team head coaches since 2000, and the team has also used interim coaches and team directors during that time.

Coach	Tenure	Country	Highlight
John Wright	2000–2005	New Zealand	Led India to the 2003 World Cup final
Greg Chappell	2005–2007	Australia	Left after India's first-round exit at the 2007 World Cup
Gary Kirsten	2008–2011	South Africa	India won the 2011 World Cup
Duncan Fletcher	2011–2015	Zimbabwe	India won the 2013 Champions Trophy
Anil Kumble	2016–2017	India	One year as head coach
Ravi Shastri	2017–2021	India	Also served as team director from 2014 to 2016
Rahul Dravid	2021–2024	India	2024 T20 World Cup winners
Gautam Gambhir	2024–present	India	2025 Champions Trophy and 2026 T20 World Cup

Coaches of the India women's team

The women's senior team has its own head coach. Ramesh Powar's tenure ended in December 2022, and Hrishikesh Kanitkar served as interim coach before the BCCI appointed Amol Muzumdar in October 2023. Under Muzumdar, India won the 2025 ICC Women's ODI World Cup.

Some coaches also work across teams. VVS Laxman, head of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence, has been named to lead the senior men's team for particular series, which is why the coach for one tour is not always the permanent head coach.
