How to Organize a Box Cricket Tournament: Rules, Teams and Planning

A practical plan for a society, college or corporate event: the venue, team size, rulebook, format, schedule, budget and scoring, from the first booking to the final.

To organize a box cricket tournament, book a suitable venue, set team size and registration rules, write the box cricket rules before play, choose a format, build a schedule and budget, and keep accurate scores for every match. Do these in order and the event is far easier to run.

Box cricket has become a popular way to bring residential societies, colleges, corporate teams and clubs together through short, fast matches without a full-sized ground. A good tournament needs more than a booked turf and a list of teams. This guide covers the planning from start to finish.

Key takeaway

Box cricket rules and team sizes differ between venues. Confirm them early, write them down and share them with every captain before the first match.

Planning element	What to consider
Team size	Commonly 6–8 players per side, with 5-a-side also used
Match length	Often 4–10 overs per innings
Venue	Indoor arena or enclosed turf
Formats	League, group stage or knockout
Equipment	Bat, ball, stumps, nets and a scoreboard
Officials	Umpire, scorer and event coordinator

These are common ranges, not universal standards. Final team sizes, overs and equipment depend on the venue and the tournament rules.

Choose the right venue

The venue is one of the first decisions. Box cricket is played in a confined area, usually surrounded by nets or walls, so check these points before booking.

Playing area: is it suitable for your team size and match format?
Nets and boundaries: how do the side nets, back net and roof affect scoring and dismissals?
Lighting: is it enough for evening matches?
Facilities: water, seating, washrooms and changing areas.
Safety: the surface, netting, surrounding structures and entry areas.

Also confirm the available time slots and whether the venue supplies equipment or you must arrange it.

Decide team size and registration rules

Box cricket uses smaller teams than the 11-a-side game. Teams of 6 to 8 are common, and 5-a-side formats are also used, depending on the space and competition. Settle these points before registrations open.

Maximum squad size and playing team size
Number of substitutes allowed
Eligibility and age limits, if any
Whether a player can represent more than one team
Registration deadlines and replacement rules
Captain and contact details for each team

Collect names and details in advance, since a confirmed squad list avoids confusion on the day. For a larger event, assign a coordinator to handle registrations and updates.

Finalise the box cricket rules

Rules differ from one venue to another, especially for net contact, roof hits, bowling limits and dismissals. Many box formats, for example, do not use LBW, and some allow catches off the nets. Never assume your venue follows the same system as another. Hover over a card for the four areas your rulebook should cover.

Write the rulebook down, share it with every captain before the first match and do not change it mid-tournament. Clear playing conditions stop arguments and keep the event fair. If disputes do arise, see how umpires handle disputes in local cricket matches.

Select the tournament format

The format decides how many matches you play, how long the event lasts and how teams qualify. Three suit box cricket.

League (round robin): every team plays every other team, which suits events where each team should get many matches.
Group stage, then knockouts: teams play in groups and the best advance to semi-finals and a final.
Knockout: losers exit, which suits one-day events with limited venue time but gives teams only one chance.

Example: eight teams in two groups

Each group of four plays a round robin of 4 × 3 ÷ 2 = 6 matches. The top two from each group reach the semi-finals.

Stage	Matches
Group A (4 teams, round robin)	6
Group B (4 teams, round robin)	6
Semi-finals	2
Final	1
Total	15

This gives every team several matches while keeping the schedule manageable. For more on formats and match counts, read how to create cricket fixtures for a local tournament.

Plan the schedule, budget and match day

Fixtures and schedule

List the match numbers and teams, the date and start time, the court if you use more than one, the match length and changeover time, the breaks between rounds and the semi-final and final timings. Do not schedule every match back-to-back, because teams need time to change over and delays happen. Send the fixtures and reporting times to all captains in advance.

Budget and entry fees

List the expected costs first: venue rental, balls and equipment, umpire and scorer payments, trophies and certificates, refreshments, first aid and promotion. Then work out the entry fee.

Entry fee

Entry fee per team = total estimated cost ÷ number of teams. Add a small buffer for surprises. If you offer prize money, fix the amount and the split in advance and share it openly.

Equipment and roles

Tick off the match-day equipment, then assign a person to each role.

Role	Responsibility
Tournament coordinator	Overall event management
Umpire	Match decisions and rule enforcement
Scorer	Recording runs, wickets and overs
Team captain	Player coordination
Event volunteer	Announcements and match scheduling

With several matches, a dedicated scorer is especially important, as it reduces missed deliveries, wrong totals and late results.

Manage scores and keep everyone updated

Recording runs, wickets, overs and results matters just as much as the fixtures, because group standings and knockout qualification depend on them. A digital cricket scoring app can make this easier. With CricLive, organisers and scorers can manage match scoring digitally, record ball-by-ball updates, share live scores and open scorecards and match statistics, instead of relying only on handwritten scorebooks and group-chat updates.

To understand the numbers, see How to maintain a cricket points table and match scores, and learn more about a free cricket scoring app with live scores and stats.

Start promoting the event before registrations close, with the tournament name, registration details and schedule shared on social media and community groups. During the event, keep participants updated with:

Fixtures and upcoming matches
Live scores and results
The points table and standings
Top batting and bowling performances
Semi-final and final updates

After the tournament, share the winners, the final scorecard and individual achievements.

Common mistakes to avoid

Not confirming venue rules

Venues differ on boundaries and net contact, so ask before you plan.

Changing rules mid-event

Finalise the playing conditions before the first match.

Overbooking match slots

Leave time for changeovers and delays.

Incomplete registration

Verify squads before the fixtures begin.

Ignoring safety

Check the playing area and keep first aid close by.

Poor score management

Record every match accurately to avoid disputes over standings.

Late communication is another common problem, so share fixtures, reporting times and any schedule changes promptly.

Frequently asked questions

How many players are required for a box cricket team?

Teams are commonly 6 to 8 players, and 5-a-side is also used, depending on the venue and tournament format. Decide the playing team size and substitute rules before registrations open.

How many overs are played in box cricket?

Matches often use between 4 and 10 overs per innings, but the number varies by venue and tournament. Choose a length that suits the time, venue and number of teams.

What are the basic rules of box cricket?

Rules usually cover team size, overs, bowling restrictions, wides, no-balls, boundaries, dismissals and scoring. Net and roof contact rules vary between venues, so publish your own playing conditions.

Which tournament format is suitable for box cricket?

How do you calculate points in a box cricket tournament?

Organisers usually award points for wins, ties and abandoned matches according to their tournament rules. Define tie-breakers, such as net run rate or another agreed method, before the competition starts.

How can organisers manage box cricket scores digitally?

They can use a digital cricket scoring app such as CricLive to record ball-by-ball updates, runs, wickets and overs, and to share live scores and scorecards with participants and followers.

Conclusion

A successful box cricket tournament depends on more than the number of teams or the excitement of the final. It needs a suitable venue, clear rules, a practical schedule, good coordination and accurate scoring.

Whether it is a society competition, a college league or a corporate event, preparing these details in advance makes the tournament easier to run.
