Common Cricket Scoring Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Spot the errors that most often break a scorecard, from extras and over counts to wrong batters and dismissals, and learn the simple checks that prevent them.

Accurate scoring is the backbone of every match, whether it is a club game, school tournament or box cricket event. The most common cricket scoring mistakes are misrecorded extras, runs given to the wrong batter, miscounted overs and incorrect dismissals. Each one can change the final scorecard, player statistics and even the result.

Key takeaway

Most scoring errors come from recording a ball before confirming what happened. Watch the delivery, check the umpire's signal, then enter it.

Recording extras incorrectly

Wides, no-balls, byes and leg-byes confuse new scorers because each is recorded differently, even though they can all add to the team total.

How to avoid it

Record a wide as a wide. It is not a legal delivery.
Record the one-run no-ball penalty separately from runs the batter scores.
Record byes when the ball passes the batter without touching bat or body, and it is not a wide.
Record leg-byes only when the batter played a shot or tried to avoid the ball.

Example: a no-ball is called and the batter hits it for four. The team gets five runs: one no-ball extra and four to the batter. Always follow the playing conditions of your match.

Extra	Legal delivery?	How it is recorded
Wide	No	Wide extra; any runs run also count as wides
No-ball	No	One-run penalty; bat runs go to the batter
Bye	Yes	Team extra, not credited to the batter
Leg-bye	Yes	Team extra, only if a shot or avoidance was attempted

Crediting runs to the wrong batter

Adding runs to the non-striker instead of the striker distorts total runs and strike rate. It often happens after an odd number of runs or at the end of an over, when the batters change ends.

Confirm who faced the ball before every entry.
Swap the strike after odd runs and at the end of each over.
Check the batting scorecard every over.

Miscounting overs

An over is six legal deliveries. Wides and no-balls do not count towards those six, so the bowler delivers extra balls. Counting every ball bowled leaves the over total and remaining overs wrong.

Count legal deliveries, not every ball bowled.
Track wides and no-balls separately.
Check the over total before the bowler changes.
Follow tournament rules if they differ from standard conditions.

Scorer's tip

The same bowler cannot bowl two consecutive overs. If your sheet shows one bowler twice in a row, a bowler or over entry is wrong.

Wrong bowler or wrong dismissal

Selecting the wrong bowler

A delivery given to the wrong bowler changes runs conceded, wickets and economy rate. Confirm the bowler's name at the start of every over and review figures when it ends.

Recording the wrong wicket

Mark the correct batter out and the correct dismissal type, following the umpire's decision. Never guess. If the decision is unclear, ask the umpire before saving, then confirm the incoming batter.

Skipping the scorecard review

A total can look right while individual scores, extras or bowling figures are wrong. Run this check before you close an innings.

Team total equals batting runs plus extras Wickets recorded are correct Overs and legal deliveries are accurate Batting and bowling figures are consistent Result matches the scores and match rules

Four habits of reliable scorers

A digital scoring app organises deliveries, runs, wickets and players into a structured scorecard and, depending on the app, may help you review or correct entries. It is still only as accurate as the data entered, so scorers must know the rules and verify the final figures. CricLive offers cricket scores, ball-by-ball updates and detailed scorecards.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common cricket scoring mistakes?

Misrecording extras, crediting runs to the wrong batter, counting wides or no-balls as legal deliveries, selecting the wrong bowler and entering an incorrect dismissal.

Do wides and no-balls count as balls in an over?

No. Under the Laws of Cricket, an over is six legal deliveries, and wides and no-balls are not among them.

How do I correct a cricket scorecard mistake?

Recall the original delivery, confirm the outcome with the umpire if needed, correct the entry, then recheck the team total and individual figures.

Why is accurate cricket scoring important?

It keeps team totals, player statistics, bowling figures and results reliable for players and organisers.

Conclusion

Most cricket scoring mistakes come from a few habits: guessing, rushing and skipping checks. Record extras by their own rules, count only legal deliveries, confirm the striker, bowler and dismissal, and review the scorecard before you close each innings.

A digital scoring app can keep records organised, but accuracy still depends on the scorer watching every delivery and verifying the final figures.
